Tribulus Terrestris: Benefits and Side Effects
What is Tribulus Terrestris?
Tribulus Terrestris is the name of a plant that grows in many parts of the world.
It can grow in dry arid climates so it can adapt almost anywhere.
In North America, it is an invasive plant (weed) and like many weeds, it goes by a variety of different names including:
- Goats head
- Small caltrops
- Puncture Vine
- Devils thorn
Tribulus Terrestris is found in many dietary supplements and natural testosterone boosters, it can be found on the shelves of most fitness and health stores.
The Tribulus plant has a long history, the plant has been used for centuries in traditional medicine of India and China.
Its active compounds are called “steroidal saponins”.
There are two types of steroidal saponins which are:
– Spirostanol glycosides
– Furostanol glycosides
The two compounds are found mainly in the plant’s leaves and are responsible for Tribulus Terrestris testosterone boosting benefits.
Why Do People Use Tribulus Terrestris?
Most often, Tribulus Terrestris is used to treat symptoms of low testosterone, including poor sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and infertility.
In the last decade, it has also become popular for its ability to improve muscle and athletic performance.
Some of the most common benefits of Tribulus Terrestris have already been touted, though not scientifically proven, the following four benefits from taking Tribulus Terrestris have shown great promise.
(1) To treat erectile dysfunction and boost hormone levels
Studies found that Tribulus Terrestris has the capacity to increase to heighten sexual behavior (sex drive) in both men and women.
2) Sports Performance
It is well known that Tribulus Terrestris is popular and appreciated for its sports enhancement.
Scientists wanted to certify these facts and conducted a double-blind study on 15 subjects.
Some of them were assigned to 3,21 mg. of Tribulus Terrestris per body weight kg./daily; while others received a placebo.
After 8 weeks of treatment and resistance training, both groups experienced improvements and the Tribulus Terrestris group experienced a special strength increase in leg press.
3 ) Tribulus Terrestris Benefits for Bodybuilding
Tribulus is one of the best ways for men and women to increase testosterone, however, the effects are a bit different between both sexes.
4) Tribulus Terrestris Can Help Fight Infections
Based on a study from Iraq, Tribulus Terrestris has been found to be helpful in curing bacterial and fungal infections. Furthermore, improvements were also seen in subjects with urinary tract infections.
Tribulus Terrestris for men
Obviously, the primary hormone in men is testosterone.
Men who take Tribulus Terrestris will notice a boost in testosterone.
Tribulus Terrestris increases Leutinizing hormone, LH tells your body to produce more testosterone.
More testosterone means more strength and increased muscle.
One of the benefits Tribulus offers over using anabolic steroids is that anabolic steroids can reduce luteinizing hormone and shut down your bodies natural testosterone production.
What this means is that while the results from taking supplements containing Tribulus Terrestris may take slightly longer, you will not risk shutting down natural testosterone production and it does not raise estrogen levels.
Tribulus Terrestris for Women
Just like for men, Tribulus Terrestris can have a positive effect on women, it helps boost estrogen levels and as a result, increases sexual function and can prevent symptoms of menopause.
One study followed a group of 36 women 20 of the women were given Tribulus Terrestris and 16 were given a placebo.
After 120 days women given the Tribulus showed an improvement of sexual arousal/lubrication while the placebo group showed no change.
Women given Tribulus also showed an increase in free testosterone levels.
While there is no hard scientific evidence that Tribulus Terrestris can boost physical performance it is still widely used by women and those who do take it claim to see an improvement in athletic performance and strength.
Tribulus Terrestris Possible Side Effects
The United States FDA (Food and Drug Administration) doesn’t regulate Tribulus Terrestris.
This means that this plant hasn’t been controlled like other natural substances. This is the reason why the full spectrum of possible side-effects isn’t completely known.
Some men and women have noticed mild side effects from taking Tribulus Terrestris in most cases they are not life-threatening.
Some of the more commonly reported side effects include:
- Stomach pain
There are some cases when Tribulus Terrestris shouldn’t be used:
– Pregnant women;
– Nursing women;
– People with breast or prostate cancer, which are dependent on hormone treatments.
Tribulus Terrestris Dosage
Specialists usually recommend taking Tribulus Terrestris three times a day, in doses of 85 to 250 mg. They also recommend to take it with meals.
When you decide to buy a Tribulus Terrestris product and to start a treatment, remember that the products don’t contain equal quantities of the plant.
Different supplements will contain different ingredients in various quantities. Be sure to read the ingredients and to use the supplements with caution.
You should start with a test period, in order to make sure that you don’t have any side effects.
You should also consider talking to your doctor about your plans. In the end, all that matters is to obtain the desired results and to remain healthy.

While there are many ways to increase hormone levels and build muscle, most of them are chemical based and require taking some kind of anabolic steroid.
Tribulus Terrestris mimics the effect of anabolic steroids and stimulates your body’s own natural testosterone production.
This makes it a safe and practical way to increase hormone levels without negative side effects on your health.
